Have you ever watched a film on late night TV and wondered what ever happened to a director, producer, actor or other film creator?  Many old films have fallen into the Public Domain or that gray royalty-free area sometimes referred to as the "Orphan film."  This means the creators don't get paid when their work is televised or sold on DVD.

Free Night of the Living Dead video remix

We love the public domain, but we feel that good-faith royalties should be generated for the creators of such classics as Night of the Living Dead.

That's why NLDFILM and associates are forming this unique organization, known as the "Benefit Project."  We plan to re-introduce Public Domain films and "Orphan" titles, like some of the old monster-movies released by AIP and Roger Corman back in the 50's and 60's.  These are fun movies that involve Wasp-women, Brain's-that-won't-die and Creatures from...well you get the picture.

We'll distribute these films with some extra content, like an interview with someone from the original cast of an old film, and we may do just a little creative-editing in order to make an old film even more appealing to a young audience.  In fact, we must make small, creative changes to the original films in order for us to register a new copyright, and this in turn allows us to offer copyright-equity to the surviving-creators of the original work

About our controversial remix...

The "Benefit for the Living Dead" release is an expanded, 2007 revision of our old Internet-demo called "Night of the Living Dead Survivor's Cut."

The Survivor's Cut was a tribute to the surviving individuals that were involved with the creation of the original 1968 film.  Archive.org supplied over 3,000 FREE low-rez downloads in May-June of 2005.

Although numerous reviews shed a positive light on the Survivor's Cut, the movie was never released Critics said good things about the demoas a commercial production.  Only a few promotional DVD-R's were distributed by Customflix+.

This misunderstood release did not manage to attach NOTLD associates like Director George Romero or Writer John Russo. Therefore, after a few months the Survivor's Cut was shelved.

The Benefit Project

This project is being organized to literally-pay-tribute to the people that are responsible for the creation of movies like NOTLD that have fallen into the public domain or are considered "orphan films."

The Benefit Project is a media-distribution organization (in development) that has a benevolent agenda, rather than a commercial one.

You may have heard about BMI, the Harry Fox AgenGet your Benefit DVD nowcy and the Sound Exchange for musicians...but this is the first organization like this for filmmakers!

Benefit for the Living Dead

This is a fund-in-the making that is dedicated to the icons of filmmaking that you love.

This landmark movie serves a higher purpose.  The Benefit for the Living Dead will financially-feed the organization's fund, which will administer royalites and/or equity to the surviving filmmakers who elect to participate.

It's a good cause and good entertainment.  We hope you take a moHouseOfHorrors.com - "amazing take on a classic"ment to check it out - you'll find the pacing of the story is revised and faster, and there is some new footage too.  Respected sources like Diabolical Dominion and Creature Corner liked Dean Lachiusa's contemporary editing, so we're sure you'll appreciate it too.

Public Domain Adaptions

Here's how the Benefit Project works in relation to Public Domain and orphan films, in particular the Night of the Living Dead:

  1. We adapted and created a new version of the public domain film,  and this allowed us to register our copyright. We also registered the new script via WGA.
  2. We now can sell the Benefit for the Living Dead or the Survivor's Cut movie worldwide, in all mediums including late night TV.
  3. We welcome the surviving writers, crew, actors and other talent who were involved with the original 1968 film to participate in the Benefit project.
Judith O'dea - is she a participating survivor?Participating "survivor's" may elect to receive royalties and/or copyright-equity, or to direct their dividends to a charity.  This will most likely be administered by an organization like the Actors Fund or the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF.)

A note to film purists

Don't worry, this doesn't mean that any of the NOTLD "survivor's" have explicitly endorsed the Benefit Project or the Survivor's Cut. Nor does it imply in any way that a "benefit" release replaces, challenges or competes in any manner with the source material -- like the original NOTLD.

Trade information

NLDFILM is an entity that is responsible for the Night of the Living Dead Survivor's Cut, which is the 2005 re-imagination of the George Romero horror classic film.   The 72minute feature film is listed on IMDB and other industry trade sources, and Lachiusa would like to talk to acquisition personnel about how the SC and the Benefit edition can be released to further benefit "survivor's" of films like Night of the Living Dead. And of course, we welcome your assistance in the development of the Benefit Project.
